Marquette County Release Paths
A release is bounded by one agency. Marquette County Jail may record a person leaving for the community, but it may also record transport to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, the United States Marshals Service, ICE, court, or medical custody. Those events all end a stay in the local building. Only a community release ends custody rather than moving it. The release authority and receiving-agency fields make that distinction.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office owns the direct jail booking and release event. The court register adds the legal reason, such as bond, dismissal, sentence, or time served. MI-VINE can corroborate a custody change. State-prison parole or discharge follows a different track through MDOC’s Offender Tracking Information System, known as OTIS. Federal and immigration sources are narrower still. A result must be read only for the system that supplied it.

Marquette County Release Types
The words used in a Marquette County release record should be read with the date, authority, and destination. A court order can permit release before jail processing is complete. A transfer can look like a release from the county roster even though custody continues. The Sheriff’s native disposition is therefore more useful than an assumption based on a vanished app entry.

Probation is not always a prison-release type. A circuit court may impose felony probation without a prison term, while the 96th District Court separately handles misdemeanor probation. The order and supervising office establish what happened.
Note: Read the release type with its recorded destination because the same exit date can describe community release or continued custody.
Marquette County Release Record Fields
No official Marquette County webpage publishes a complete field-level release record. A focused FOIA request should name the person and custody period, then ask for fields that identify the booking, exit, authority, and destination. The custodian decides which records exist and which parts are disclosable.

A release record is not the same as a conviction record. Charges may be dismissed or amended. The court register should be used for disposition, while the jail event establishes physical movement out of county custody.
Request Marquette County Release Records
The Marquette County FOIA hub provides procedures, fee information, forms, and appeal material. The county also accepts an online FOIA request, while the Sheriff publishes a department form. Use one route unless the county asks for another copy.
- Give the full name and a date of birth, booking number, or narrow booking range when known.
- Request the booking and release date and time, release authority, disposition, and receiving agency for a transfer.
- Ask for the associated booking photograph only when needed, plus electronic delivery and all segregable nonexempt parts.
- Ask the county to identify the exemption for any withheld material and to state when no responsive record exists.
- Set a fee ceiling and request an estimate before work above that amount begins.
Michigan FOIA generally calls for a grant, denial, partial response, or one extension notice within five business days. An extension may add no more than ten business days and must state the reason and response date. Fees may include permitted mailing, copying, and certain labor costs under MCL 15.234. No flat Marquette County price for a jail release sheet or booking photograph was found. The County Clerk’s separate record-check fee is not a Sheriff FOIA price.

Marquette County Release Record Law
Michigan FOIA is Act 442 of 1976, MCL 15.231 and following. MCL 15.243 contains exemptions that can protect defined privacy, investigative, medical, security, and statute-confidential information. MCL 15.244 calls for nonexempt portions to be separated and produced when practical. That framework supports a precise request, not a promise that every jail field or photograph must be released.
No Marquette County policy found in the research states how long the mobile app keeps a former inmate or how long each underlying jail item is retained. FOIA controls access to records a public body possesses. It does not itself set retention. If no record is found, ask for the applicable retention disposition. A Michigan set-aside under MCL 780.623 can make the retained official justice record nonpublic under the statute, but it does not guarantee deletion of every earlier public copy.
Note: An arrest, booking, court order, and physical jail exit are separate events and may carry different timestamps.
Find Marquette County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custodian. Marquette County Jail, MDOC, USMS, BOP, and ICE each answer a different question. There is no official Marquette browser archive for releases in the last day or three days, so the Sheriff app cannot be treated as a historical list.
- Use the official Sheriff app on Apple or Android only to see whether a person is currently displayed after arraignment.
- Search MI-VINE, select Michigan, open the matching person, and read the supplying agency and event label.
- Use MiCOURT Case Search for bond, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or transfer context.
- Request the Sheriff’s booking and release event for the exact exit time, authority, and receiving agency.
- Search OTIS only when MDOC custody or state supervision is involved.
- Use BOP, ICE, or federal court sources when the county record identifies a federal handoff.
When sources disagree, match the full name, date of birth or agency number, case number, and custody period. Then ask what each date means. Court authorization, data update, transport, physical exit, parole start, and final discharge must not be merged into one unsupported date.
Marquette Release Alerts and Supervision
MI-VINE through VINELink fills an important local gap because Marquette County does not publish a recent-release archive in a web browser. The service accepts searches online, in its app, or by phone at 1-800-770-7657; TTY service is 1-866-847-1298. It reports custody changes supplied by participating Michigan county jails and MDOC. A release event supports departure from the supplying agency. A transfer event shows that custody continued with a new custodian. Registration should occur while the person is still in custody because a former record is not promised to remain available.
Post-release supervision requires another distinction. PAROLE in OTIS, paired with Date Paroled, shows prison exit followed by MDOC control. PROB means state felony probation and does not prove a prison stay or prison release. Misdemeanor probation in Marquette County belongs to 96th District Court Probation, not the local MDOC parole and felony probation office. An ABSCOND status describes an unresolved supervision status rather than a fresh release event.
The Michigan sex-offender registry is relevant only to people who must register under SORA. An Active entry can be a post-release status clue, while an Incarcerated entry describes current Michigan confinement within that system. Registry status does not give the exact Marquette County Jail exit time, and an absent registry result says nothing about most released people.
Marquette Released Inmate OTIS Search
Michigan OTIS covers people in prison, on MDOC parole or probation, and those within the system’s public post-discharge window. It excludes Marquette County jail-only detainees, jail-only sentences, unsentenced people, and discharged cases outside that window. A county detainee does not enter OTIS merely by being held at the jail.

When a public OTIS profile is too thin or has aged out, an MDOC record request can seek available PENPACK material. Depending on the record and lawful disclosure, that packet may include a Basic Information Sheet, Judgment of Sentence, photograph, Parole Eligibility Report, and Discharge Certificate. Use the MDOC number, full name, and sentence or case to identify the file.
Note: OTIS normally removes a discharged profile after three years, but that public limit does not prove agency records were destroyed.
Marquette Release Records in Court
Marquette’s court path divides the legal record by case level. The 96th District Court handles bail, misdemeanors, felony first appearances, and preliminary examinations. The 25th Circuit Court handles felony criminal matters. MiCOURT can show the register of actions for both routes, including a bond, dismissal, plea, judgment, sentence, probation, or later order.
A court entry still does not certify the jail’s minute of physical exit. Bond may be posted before release processing ends. Time served can explain the judgment while another hold remains. An MDOC sentence can cause transport from the jail into state custody. Pair the court event with the Sheriff release or transfer entry. For a circuit record service, the County Clerk is at the Courthouse Annex, 234 W. Baraga Avenue, with published weekday office hours and a separate record-check service.
Marquette Release and Reentry Status
Marquette Branch Prison is MDOC’s Offender Success and Prisoner Reentry facility for all fifteen Upper Peninsula counties. It may house prisoners who received positive parole action and need in-reach work. Placement there does not mean physical release. A favorable Board action begins more processing, and a proposed date may change.
Marquette Regional Community Corrections is a separate local program source for pretrial and structured services. Program participation likewise does not prove a final exit. For state-prison release, look for OTIS PAROLE with Date Paroled. For a local jail case, obtain the Sheriff event. Current supervision can then be checked through the correct state or district office.
Note: Positive parole action and reentry placement are preparation stages; OTIS status and Date Paroled confirm the later prison exit.
Marquette Release Mail Duties
The jail publishes one narrow after-release mail rule. A former inmate is responsible for canceling newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Later issues are not forwarded or returned; they go to the jail library. This rule does not describe general property handoff, identification replacement, a release exit, or a place for family members to wait.
No official source located for Marquette gives a general property-return schedule, transportation plan, or family pickup procedure. Those details should be asked of the jail for the specific release. The public service-window closure times published by Jail Services are not release-processing hours.
Marquette Jail Release Ambiguity
The current Marquette County Jail was built in 1975 and has 80 beds. The official jail page also says up to ten federal inmates may be housed there. That federal layer matters: leaving the county building can mean USMS transport rather than release to the community. The county event should identify the receiving authority when that information is disclosable.
Marquette Branch Prison, dating to 1889, is a separate MDOC institution with Levels I and V. A move from the county jail to that prison remains custody. A move from the prison to another MDOC site also remains custody. The correct facility and agency must stay attached to every release claim.
Marquette Post-Release Fees Explained
Marquette County publishes charges that are easy to confuse with record fees. Jail stay reimbursement is listed at $60 per day and is billed only after the person is no longer incarcerated. Medical and mental-health costs are handled separately. Payment plans are available, and unpaid balances may move to civil collection. A later bill can support that the stay ended before billing, but it is not the authoritative release timestamp.
The Sheriff’s Work Pass-Day Parole program lists a different $25 daily amount. Neither figure is a flat FOIA charge. Michigan FOIA fees must be tied to the allowed work and itemization rules, and the requester may ask for an estimate.
Marquette Sheriff Release Program
The phrase “Sheriff’s Release Program” does not mean final discharge in Marquette County. The Work Pass-Day Parole program allows a court-authorized scheduled absence for work, accredited education or training, or community treatment. A presiding judge’s order is required, and the person remains incarcerated during the program.
Someone participating in Work Pass-Day Parole should not be reported as a released inmate based on a temporary absence. Confirm the final custody endpoint through the booking and release record. A court order or program entry explains the terms but does not replace the jail’s exit event.
Note: Work Pass-Day Parole keeps the participant in jail custody even during a judge-approved absence for a listed purpose.
Compare Marquette Release Sources
Each system answers a limited question. A current lookup can show who is presently listed, while a release record preserves a past event. State and federal locators do not expand to cover every other custodian.

MI-VINE is the release and custody-change alert channel for participating Michigan jails and MDOC. A “transfer” alert means custody continued. Eligible state-prison crime-victim notices for parole and hearing matters require separate registration with the MDOC Crime Victim Notification Unit.
Marquette County Release Facilities
Two adult detention facilities define the local search map. Marquette County Jail is the county facility for local custody and some federal holds. Its Sheriff booking and release event is the direct source for a community exit or transfer. Marquette Branch Prison is an MDOC state prison. Its parole and recent discharge path runs through OTIS and MDOC records.
No separate BOP institution, dedicated ICE detention site, or adult long-term municipal lockup was identified in Marquette County. Federal beds inside the county jail do not create a third facility. Juvenile facilities and juvenile records are outside this adult record path.
Note: Always keep the releasing facility, supplying agency, event type, and recorded date together when preserving a custody change.
